THE PERFECT cycling sunglasses

Whether it's a brisk ride on a racing bike, a challenging mountain bike tour or a more relaxed tour on your E-bike: cycling is booming like never before! In order to protect your eyes when going on a ride, special cycling sunglasses should not be missing. We have researched for you why these special sports sunglasses are not only a stylish accessory, but also indispensable on your bike tour.

DO I NEED SUNGLASSES WHEN CYCLING?

We can answer this question with a clear YES. When you are out on your bike, your eyes are exposed to a number of dangers: On the one hand, there is the head wind, which stresses your eyes, especially at higher speeds, and dries them out easily. In extreme cases, conjunctivitis is the result. The dust, dirt, pollen or small stones that are thrown up can also harm your eyes. Last but not least, UV rays are a strain on your eyes. So, there are many good reasons to wear good cycling sunglasses.

What SHOULD cycling sunglasses LOOK LIKE?

In comparison to conventional sunglasses, extra-large lenses are recommended for cycling sunglasses – they provide a good field of vision and thus more safety. Sunglasses with a curved frame are also advantageous. Thanks to the curved frame, these sunglasses close on the side of the face and thus offer you more protection than sunglasses with a straight frame. In terms of type, a distinction is made between full-rim and half-rim sports sunglasses. Sports sunglasses with full rims have the advantage that they are more stable and bettter protect your eyes, whereas sports sunglasses with half rims are usually a little lighter. We have combined both advantages and opted for extra light cycling sunglasses with full-rim.

HOW SHOULD cycling sunglasses FIT?

It is important that the sunglasses fit snugly on the head. If the eyelashes touch the glass, the sunglasses are too small for you. You can test whether sports sunglasses fit you well when you shake your head: if the sunglasses move, then they are too big for you.

WHAT OTHER FEATURES ARE IMPORTANT WHEN CHOOSING CYCLING SunGLASSES?

Basically important for all types of sunglasses, but especially for sports sunglasses is the use of high-quality material for both glasses and frame. One of the best materials on the market right now is definitely polycarbonate. This high-performance plastic is particularly break-proof (10 times more impact-resistant than conventional plastic) and does not splinter, which protects your eyes perfectly. In addition, polycarbonate can be grinded particularly thin, which in turn is results in extremely light glasses. Perfect wearing comfort of you sunglasses is guaranteed. Another advantage of polycarbonate is that it offers excellent UV protection. This brings us to the next question:

WHAT UV PROTECTION SHOULD cycling sunglasses OFFER?

Intense ultraviolet rays (UV rays) can leave their mark not only on the skin but also in the eyes. Inflammation of the cornea or the retina up to cataracts can be the consequences. This makes it all the more important to ensure adequate UV protection when buying sunglasses or sports sunglasses. Sunglasses should filter UV rays up to a wavelength of 400 nanometers, so the eye is protected from harmful UV-A rays and UV-B rays. You can recognize them by the label UV400 or 100% UV protection. The tint of the lenses should not be confused with UV protection. This filter does not protect against UV rays, but does protect against glare and is therefore also essential for good sports sunglasses. Sunglasses with a category 0 or 1 filter do not adequately protect against glare, while sunglasses with category 2 filters protect you well and sunglasses with category 3 filters very well against glare. Sunglasses with category 4 filters are not approved for road traffic because they darken too much. When choosing your cycling sunglasses, pay attention not only to UV protection but also to the filter category. You can find more information about the filters in our user guide.
