HD technology – enhanced contrast with NICK

The HD technology of the NICK ski goggles enhances contrast and supports the clear perception of contours, transitions and uneven terrain in the snow. This makes it easier to recognise changes in the terrain in varying light conditions and maintain a clear overview both on and off the piste.

In addition to the main lens, NICK includes a magnetic Category 1 interchangeable lens – Clear Gold, Clear Red or Clear Blue, depending on the model. The lighter CAT 1 lens is particularly suitable for cloudy days, snowfall and limited visibility.

Thanks to the magnetic interchangeable lens system, the lens can be changed quickly and without tools. NICK therefore combines contrast-enhancing HD vision with the flexibility of ski goggles with interchangeable lenses.

Photochromic technology – automatic adjustment with LARRY Photochromatic

The photochromic lens of the LARRY Photochromatic ski goggles automatically adjusts its tint within Categories 1 to 3 according to the UV and light conditions. The lens becomes darker when exposed to intense sunlight and lighter when UV radiation decreases.

Magnetic interchangeable lens system – flexibility in changing weather

A magnetic interchangeable lens system allows you to change the lens of your ski goggles quickly and without tools. This lets you select the appropriate tint and light transmission for sunshine, cloudy weather, snowfall or poor visibility.

In addition to the main lens, NICK includes a magnetic CAT 1 interchangeable lens – Clear Gold, Clear Red or Clear Blue, depending on the model. NICK therefore combines contrast-enhancing HD technology with the flexibility of a magnetic interchangeable lens system.

JAMIE also features a magnetic lens that is held securely in the frame by eight precisely positioned magnets. In addition to the included main lens, a wide range of interchangeable lenses in different colours and categories is available separately.

For kids, JODY also features a magnetic interchangeable lens system. The model comes with an additional clear lens, allowing the lens to be changed quickly to suit different visibility conditions.

Polycarbonate ski goggle lenses

The lenses of POP EYES ski goggles are made from robust yet lightweight polycarbonate. This durable material offers high impact resistance, making it particularly suitable for skiing and snowboarding.

Polycarbonate provides clear, low-distortion vision and can be produced in different tints, colours and lens categories. This allows ski goggle lenses to be adapted to a variety of light and weather conditions.

All POP EYES ski goggles protect your eyes from harmful UV radiation. The visible darkness of a lens does not indicate the quality of its UV protection: lighter lenses can also provide full UV protection.

Dual lenses and anti-fog coating

All POP EYES ski goggles feature dual lenses and an anti-fog coating on the inside of the lens. The space between the two lenses creates an insulating layer of air that reduces the temperature difference between the cold outside air and the warmer air inside the goggles.

The anti-fog coating provides additional support for clear vision and helps reduce fogging on the inside of the lens. However, ski goggles may still fog up during intense physical activity, in humid weather or when exposed to sudden temperature changes.

To preserve the sensitive coating for as long as possible, never wipe the inside of the lens when dry or rub it vigorously.

SKI GOGGLES VENTILATION

Good airflow is important because it allows warm, humid air to escape from inside the ski goggles. The ventilation openings in POP EYES ski goggles support continuous airflow and help reduce lens fogging.

Make sure that the ventilation openings are not blocked by your ski helmet, hat or snow. The ventilation system, dual lens and anti-fog coating can only work together effectively when air is able to circulate as freely as possible.

Wide field of vision

A wide field of vision helps you notice changes in the terrain, other winter sports enthusiasts and potential obstacles at an early stage. The lenses and frames of POP EYES ski goggles are therefore designed to provide a broad view of your surroundings.

The actual field of vision also depends on the selected model, your individual face shape and the fit of the goggles. They should sit evenly against your face and should not be positioned too high or too low.

Light transmission and VLT

VLT stands for “Visible Light Transmission” and describes how much visible light passes through a ski goggle lens. The VLT value is expressed as a percentage and helps you select the right lens for different light and weather conditions.

A low VLT value means that the lens allows only a small amount of visible light to pass through and therefore appears darker. These lenses are particularly suitable for sunny days. A high VLT value indicates a lighter lens that allows more light to pass through, making it suitable for cloudy weather, snowfall, fog or flat-light conditions.

Ski goggle lenses are divided into five categories according to their light transmission:

  • Category 0 – approximately 80 to 100% light transmission: very light or clear lenses for snowfall, fog, dusk and very poor visibility
  • Category 1 – approximately 43 to 80% light transmission: light-coloured lenses for cloudy days, flat light and limited visibility
  • Category 2 – approximately 18 to 43% light transmission: versatile lenses for changing conditions with both sunshine and cloud
  • Category 3 – approximately 8 to 18% light transmission: dark lenses for bright and predominantly sunny days
  • Category 4 – approximately 3 to 8% light transmission: very dark lenses for exceptionally intense light conditions

Important: The VLT value describes the transmission of visible light, not UV protection. Lighter Category 0 and Category 1 lenses can also provide full protection from UV radiation.

Ski goggle lens tints and mirror coatings

The tint of a ski goggle lens influences how bright or dark your surroundings appear. Depending on the lens technology, it may also support the perception of contrasts and contours.

A mirror coating is applied to the outside of the lens and reflects some of the incoming visible light. It also creates the signature look of many POP EYES ski goggles. However, the actual amount of light that passes through the lens is determined by the combination of its base tint, coating and mirror finish.

The visible colour of a lens therefore does not provide reliable information about its lens category or UV protection. When choosing a lens, always consider the recommended light conditions, lens category and VLT value.

Adjustable strap and helmet compatibility

An elastic, adjustable strap ensures that the ski goggles sit securely on your head or ski helmet. The length can be adjusted individually so that the goggles rest evenly against your face without pressing or slipping.

Silicone strips on the inside of the strap improve grip on the ski helmet and help prevent the goggles from slipping while you are skiing or snowboarding.

What are the benefits of polycarbonate ski goggle lenses?

Polycarbonate is lightweight, flexible and highly impact-resistant. This makes the material particularly suitable for ski goggles. It can also be produced in different tints, colours and lens categories.

Do darker ski goggle lenses provide better UV protection?

Not automatically. The visible darkness of a lens and its UV protection are two different properties. Lighter lenses can also provide full UV protection. The tint and VLT value primarily determine how much visible light passes through the lens.

What is the difference between the VLT value and the lens category?

The VLT value indicates the percentage of visible light that passes through a lens. The lens category assigns this value to one of five ranges, from Category 0 to Category 4. Generally, the lower the category, the lighter the lens.

Which lens category is suitable for poor weather?

Light-coloured lenses in Categories 0 or 1 are generally suitable for fog, snowfall and flat-light conditions. They allow more visible light to pass through than darker Category 2 or Category 3 lenses.

Why can ski goggles fog up despite having an anti-fog coating?

How do I clean my ski goggles properly?

Carefully remove loose snow and allow wet ski goggles to dry completely at room temperature. Clean the outside of the lens with a clean, soft microfibre cloth. Do not use aggressive cleaning products, alcohol, solvents or washing-up liquid. Never wipe the sensitive inside of the lens when dry or rub it vigorously, as this may damage the anti-fog coating. How should I store my ski goggles?

Allow your ski goggles to dry completely before storing them. Keep them in the included pouch or a suitable ski goggle case. Individual interchangeable lenses should be protected separately from pressure and scratches, ideally with a suitable lens cover.
